[1]Recently I gave a dinner party for some close friends. To add a touch of elegance to the evening, I brought out the good stuff--my white Royal Crown Derby china with the fine blue-and-gold border. I admit the piece does look rather conspicuous. For one thing, it matches nothing else. It's also old and chipped. But that little gravy boat is much more than an heirloom to me. It is the one thing in this world I will never part with.
The story begins more than 50 years ago, when I was seven years old and we lived in a big house along the Ohio River in New Richmond, Ohio. All that separated the house from the river was the street and our wide front lawn. In anticipation of high water, the ground floor had been built seven feet above grade.
Late in December the heavy rains came, and the river climbed to the tops of its banks. When the water began to rise in a serious way, my parents made plans in case the river should invade our house. My mother decided she would pack our books and her fine china in a small den off the master bedroom.
The china was not nearly as good as it was old. Each piece had a gold rim and a band of roses. But the service had been her mother's and was precious to her. As she packed the china with great care, she said to me, “You must treasure the things that people you love have cherished. It keeps you in touch with them.”

Uncertainty spreads through our lives so thoroughly that it dominates our language. Our everyday speech is made up in large part of word like probably, many, soon, great, little. What do these words mean? “Atomic war,” declared a recent editorial in the London Times, “is likely to destroy forever the nation that wages it. How exactly are we to understand the word likely? Lacking any standard for estimating the probability, we are left with the judgment of the editorial writer.
Such verbal imprecision is not necessarily to be criticized. Indeed, it has a value just because it allows us to express judgments when a precise quantitative statement is out of the question.
The language of uncertainty has three main categories: (1)words such as probably, possibly, surely, which denote a single subjective probability and are potentially quantifiable; (2)words like many, of-ten, goon, which are also quantifiable but denote not so much a condition of uncertainty as a quantity imprecisely known; (3)words like fat, rich, drunk, which can not be reduced to any accepted number because they are given different values by different people.
We have been trying to pin down by experiments what people mean by these expressions in specific contexts, and how the meanings change with age. For instance, a subject is told ”There are many trees in the park” and is asked to say what number the word many mean to him. Or a child is invited to take “some” sweets from a bowl and we then count how many he has taken. We compare the number he takes when he is alone with the number when one or more other children are present and are to take some sweets after him, or with the number he takes when told to give “some” sweets to another child.
First, we find that the number depends, of course, on the items involved. To most people some friends means about five, while .some trees means about twenty. However, unrelated areas sometimes show parallel values. For instance, the language of probability seems to mean about the same thing in predictions about the weather and about politics: the expression is certain to (rain, or be elected) signifies to the average person about a 70 per cent chance; is likely to, about a 60 per cent chance; probably will, about 55 per cent.
Secondly, the size of the population of items influences the value assigned to an expression. Thus, if we. tell a subject to take ”a few“ or ”a lot of“ glass bald from a box, he will take more if the box contains a large number of glass balls than if it has a small number. Hut not prolix>rtionately more: if we increase the number of glass balls eight times, the subject takes only half as large a percentage of the total.
Thirdly, there is a marked change with age. Among children between six and fourteen years old, the older the child, the fewer glass balls he will take. But the difference between a lot and a few widens with age. This age effect is so consistent that it might be used as a test of intelligence. In place of a long test we could merely ask the subject to give numerical values to expressions such as nearly always and very rarely in a given context, and then measure his intelligence by the ratio of the number for nearly always to the one for very rarely. We have found that this ration increases systematically from about 2 to 1 for a child of seven to about 20 to 1 for a person twenty-five years old,

In the end a city will take on a bad look. 40% of us schoolmates think that an entrance fee can be accepted, but it must not be too expensive. The money from ticket selling can be used for paying the gardeners in the park and buying some other kinds of flowers and trees.

So much happened today!
First of all, Dad rang Jim to find out when he’s going to put Cammie and Grace’s horses in our front paddock. It’s been so long now since Dad bought everything for the fencing and Jim even spent a day helping to put it all up. But then today, he told Dad that he’s going to keep their horses at Ali’s. Dad wasn’t happy because it cost him a lot of money and he only put the fence up to help Jim out. And I wasn’t happy, because I was looking forward to the girls keeping their horses at my place.
Then Tom arrived with their float to pick up Kate’s horse Lulu. He said that he’s found a great horse property to keep her on and has decided to move her. This was more terrible news, because I didn’t want Kate or Lulu to go anywhere else. And I was worried that Shelley might move as well. Then I’d be left with no one.
On top of that, I was really worried because I didn’t know what would happen with Tom’s float. Would I still be able to use it? Without his float, I can’t get to pony club and Mom and Dad have already bought all my uniforms.
But luckily, Tom is kind and generous. He said that we can still borrow it. All we have to do is drive to his house to pick it up on pony club days. I was very glad! It would have been terrible otherwise. So now, Shelley and I will take our horses together – this will be heaps of fun!
Then just when I thought everything was going to be okay….Ali’s mom and my Dad nearly started a huge bushfire!!!
Ali’s mom has told us that we should burn off our small paddock – she’s done this before and it can help get rid of any bad grass and weeds that are growing. Our property used to be used for cattle and our paddocks are full of a type of grass called setaria. This is good for cows but not horses. If they eat the white husks off the top, they can end up with a disease called “big head.” This makes their heads get all swollen and makes them really sick. So we have to slash the grass with a big tractor type mower to keep the setaria really short and get rid of the white husks. Anyway, she suggested that burning off would really help and said that she would show us the best way to do it.
So she poured petrol in rows down the paddock and Dad set it alight. Before we knew it, there were rows of fire across our small paddock. But then all of a sudden the wind came up. It started blowing flames everywhere and I got really scared. Mom and Dad said that they were really worried as well. We were just about to call the fire brigade, but somehow, Dad managed to get it all under control.
What a day! Now we have a burnt paddock and one less horse because Lulu is gone. And as well as that, we have brand new fencing around our front paddock but no horses to keep in it.
But at least, we can still use Tom’s float and we can still get to pony club. It would be terrible if we couldn’t do that!
