Describe a photo or painting you like in your home.

You should say:

where and when the photo was taken or painted

which room it is in

what there are in the photo or painting

and explain why you like it.

Actually, I have a few paintings in my home. My girlfriend says it’s beginning to look like an art gallery! I guess you could call me a bit of an art-aholic, though I’m certainly no connoisseur.

By far my favourite piece is a large oil painting on canvas that I picked up on my travels in Bali. I had to roll it up to get it back to China and once I got home I had a bespoke frame made for it. It depicts a tree or plant of some sort, using an array of colours, from deep blues to vivid yellows. The image is very simple, being formed from a number of different coloured dots.

At the moment it is the centerpiece of my living room, takes pride of place on the main wall behind my sofa. There are other pieces of art in there, including some small statues and figurines, but they are eclipsed by the large oil painting, which truly dominates the room. Every guest we have visit passes comment on it, often complimenting its vibrant colours or simple aesthetic beauty.

For me personally, it’s a combination of all the things I have already mentioned. Plus, it reminds me of the places I have been and the things I have experienced on my trips abroad. The memories come flooding back every time l look at my picture. This is the primary reason I collect paintings and the reason I have more works of art than I do wall space!

Describe a subject you didn't like before but have interest in now.

You should say:

what it was

when you studied the subject

why you didn't like it before

and explain why you have interest in it now.

Let’s just say, I was far from an angel at school. I guess I wasn’t that bad, but no one would call me a model student. There were a few subjects I really didn’t care for, but mainly it was Chinese.

I’ve obviously studied Chinese throughout my school life, but it was particularly excruciating during senior high-school, so when I was around 11 to 17 years old.

Wow, where do I start? Firstly, our teacher was awful. His name was Mr Zhang and he was a real old fuddy-duddy who would only teach from the textbook and regularly bored us to death. We would have to commit countless things to memory, lots of ancient stuff like poems and chengyu, which are Chinese phrases made from between 3 to 16 characters, although the most common use 4. I couldn’t see a use for these things in modern life, they just didn’t seem practical.

As I got older and more mature, I started to respect Chinese more. I dug out some of my old textbooks and began flicking through them. Second time round they made more sense to me and I engaged with them a lot more.

Nowadays there is a greater interest in Chinese, with a variety of TV shows such as “Chengyu Yingxiong”, which means ‘Chengyu Hero’. These shows celebrate people’s knowledge of characters and in doing so celebrate our culture.

Describe a piece of equipment you want to buy in the future.

You should say:

what the equipment is

where are you going to buy it

what features it has

and explain why you want to buy it.

I’m a bit behind the times, so I think number one on my list of most wanted, indeed most needed equipment, is a smartphone.

I’m not sure exactly where to by my new toy. On the one hand I could buy it on the Internet, where it’s likely to be cheaper, but on the other hand I prefer the more intimate experience of going to a shop and seeing the product first hand before I commit to buy it. Zhongguancun, an area of Beijing, has a huge selection of technological equipment, with mall after mall housing floor after floor of computers, phones and other tech. It’s a geek’s paradise.

My current phone has been described as an ‘old man’s phone’. It basically only calls and sends text messages. My new smartphone will have a plethora of features, including a high-resolution camera and the ability to download a wide range of apps, like WeChat. It can also play movies, which will be especially useful when I’m trying to kill time on the subway on the way to work.

Really, the soon I buy a smartphone the better. It’s high time I was brought up to date, I don’t want to be one of those technophobes who is dragged kicking and screaming into the modern age. I’d also like to start using WeChat as everyone I know has it and I don’t want to get left behind or kept out of the loop.

Describe a piece of good news you heard from TV or the Internet.

You should say:

what the news was about

when you got this news

where you got this news from

and explain why you think it was a good piece of news.

I once read a piece of good news on the website of the New York Times. It was two years ago, I was still a journalism student and one of my tutors assigned me to do a presentation for my news-gathering course. The time limit was five minutes and it was supposed to be a critique, i.e., stating clearly what was good and bad about the story.

So I started preparing for my assignment. I was skimming through pages and clicking around when this article caught my eye. Basically, it was about a high school student who got bullied because he stuttered. The news story was a good one because it wasn’t what I expected it to be — a one-sided story that went on about the poor boy.

This piece was actually rather fair and balanced. It tried to show the readers what had happened to the stutterer and they gave the alleged bullies a chance to give their side of the story. From the journalistic perspective, it was a neat one.

Describe a success in your life.

You should say:

when it was

what it was

why you chose it

how you achieved.

I guess success can vary depending on your viewpoint. Some people judge success by how much money they have, the clothes they wear or the car they drive. In that respect I maybe haven’t had a lot of success so far in my life, but I have still achieved things that I am proud of.

One such thing I can remember happened when I was an undergraduate at university, I think during my second year. We were encouraged to get involved in after-school activities and events, so I volunteered to help organise a dubbing contest that was taking place. You have probably come across dubbing if you’ve watched a foreign film and the native language has been replaced with another one over the top. The students that took part had divided themselves into groups of three or four people. They would take it in turns to go up on stage and play an English movie without the sound turned on, while they spoke the words over the top of the video.

I mainly chose to volunteer so that I could earn extra credits, or points, to go towards my degree. But it was also a good opportunity to meet some new people and it gave me something to do in my spare time.

In the end everything went off without a hitch and the night was a big success. We had rehearsed everything again and again and all the hard work paid off. I think the key to the success was everyone’s effort and teamwork, it wasn’t just a personal success, but one that I shared with a whole group of people.

Describe a useful thing you borrowed.

You should say:

what you borrowed

who lent it to you and when

what kind of features this thing has

and explain why you think it is useful.

It’s funny you should ask this question as I actually borrowed something very useful just last week, so it’s very fresh in my memory.

I’ve been doing some D.I.Y. in my apartment lately, I’m trying to do it up so that it looks a bit nicer. I wanted to put some new shelves up, but I didn’t have the right equipment, so I asked my friend Jack if I could borrow his electric drill. I had lent him something a few weeks earlier, so he didn’t mind returning the favour.

Even though on the surface it is just a drill it is extremely versatile and has more features than you might expect. It comes with a wide range of attachments for drilling different sized holes or into different types of material. There are also attachments that turn it into a screwdriver or a sander, to sand down wood and give it a smooth edge.

I’m so grateful he lent it to me, it would have been hard work to drill by hand and it saved me loads of time and energy. I put the shelves up in no time and with minimal fuss.

I’ve always wanted to buy an electric drill, but have never gotten round to it. When you don’t need something it’s easy to put off buying it, but then you don’t have it when you do need it!

Describe a film you enjoyed.

You should say:

what the film is

when and where you watched

what it is about

and explain why you enjoyed it.

I’m not a regular cinema-goer, I prefer the comfort and convenience of watching movies in my own home, where I can download them and view them on my TV. However, occasionally there is a film that I feel I must watch on the big screen, the most recent of which was Transformers 4: Age of Extinction.

It’s the newest film in the Transformers franchise, which is based on old toys that were made in the ‘80s. They tell the story of massive robots that can transform into different machines, like tanks or fire trucks, and fight battles on Earth. In this instalment, evil robots that look like dinosaurs, called Dinobots, battle it out against the good robots, called Autobots.

The film was released in the summer of , the time of the year when a lot of big blockbusters are brought out because it’s the school holidays, so they can make more money. I chose to watch the film in a 3D IMAX cinema. Nothing beats the experience of seeing a big budget movie on a huge screen, with the characters popping out at you. The sound system at the cinema is also amazing, with surround sound making you feel like you’re in the centre of the action.

Although the story wasn’t all that great, I loved the action sequences and the special effects. Some of the film was also shot in China and the Chinese actress Li BingBing made an appearance, so even though it was a Hollywood movie, I could relate to it more easily.

篇8:雅思口语Part2物品类题库:理想居所

Describe an ideal house.

You should say:

where it is

what it looks like

when you would like to live in

and explain why you would like to live in it.

Ever since I was a little boy, I’ve wanted to live in a house by the water. When I say water, I mean anywhere like the sea, a river or a lake. It doesn’t matter to me. I guess if it was by a river or a lake then I’d like the house to be right on the edge of the water so that I could have a boat moored up alongside and maybe go fishing. If it were by the sea, then I’d like to have a beach between the house and the water so I could go for walks along the coast and one day play with my kids in the sand.

The house itself could be any size, large or small would do for me as the location is what’s important. It would be cool to have a bedroom that faced the water and a balcony so that I could sit outside and have a great view. The interior of the house would be very modern, with top-of-the-range gadgets and appliances, such as a massive TV and a good cooker so that I could cook delicious meals.

I’ve no idea when I would be able to afford such a house, to be honest I think it’s a bit of a pipe-dream, but assuming I could I’d like to live there before I’m too old. I’d have to work hard first to save up lots of money, so I think middle-age is the most realistic target.

I think everyone dreams of having a big house, in a good location, with a nice interior and furnishings. We all want to live a good life and escape the hustle and bustle of the city. Being by the water would be the icing on the cake.

篇9:雅思口语Part2物品类题库:理想居所

Describe an article you read about healthy life.

You should say:

where you read it from

when you read it

what the article was about

and explain what you thought of this article.

I don’t usually read much about health, I’m not a fitness fanatic but I try to keep reasonably healthy with a little bit of exercise and by eating a balanced diet. However, there was one article that grabbed my attention recently, about sugar.

I often surf the internet and look at news websites in my spare time, I like to keep up to date with what’s going on in the world. More often than not an article will have links to other articles down the side or at the bottom of the page, so you can spend hours going from one to another.

About a month ago, during the recent athletics championships in Beijing, I was reading an article about sport when a link to another article caught my eye. It was describing how for years people had thought fat was making people overweight and so food companies would bring out lots of low-fat products that were supposed to be healthier, such as low-fat yoghurt or soft drinks. But in fact, these products are higher in sugar, and sugar is now thought to be worse for your health than fat.

I have no idea whether the article was right or not, but it certainly made me think about my sugar intake. It also made me think about people’s diet in general, with more and more kids eating sugary snacks and enjoying more Western junk food like KFC and McDonald's. I think it’s important to have these articles and documentary films that highlight the issues raised by the articles. Soon we might have a big problem with obesity, like the U.S.

篇10:雅思口语Part2物品类题库:理想居所

Describe a gift that took you a long time to prepare.

You should say:

when it happened

what the gift is

why it took you so long to choose

and explain how he or she reacted to your gift.

I pride myself on finding the best presents, especially when they’re for my nearest and dearest. One present I’m particularly proud of was for my girlfriend on her 25th birthday. It was an extra-special moment as it was also near the time of our 5th anniversary. I wanted to buy her something that meant something to both of us and had that personal touch.

I put a lot of thought into it and, after chewing it over, I eventually chose to give her a picture using an enlarged photograph of us both, that was taken while we were on holiday in Shanghai. It was a very special moment for us both, so I knew it would have sentimental value to her.

But that wasn’t the half of it, next I had to pick out a frame for the picture. My girlfriend is a notoriously picky person, so I knew I had to get

Luckily the frame I opted for was right on the money. When she unwrapped the gift, her eyes lit up, she was elated and gave me a big kiss. For the rest of the day, she was beaming and I couldn’t wipe the smile of her face. Now the picture takes pride of place in our bedroom, so I know that she really does love it!
