Escape

Lesson 81   Escape

First listen and then answer the question.

Why did the prisoner attack the driver?

When he had killed the guard, the prisoner of war quickly dragged him into the bushes. Working rapidly in the darkness, he soon changed into the dead man's clothes. Now, dressed in a blue uniform and with a rifle over his shoulder, the prisoner marched boldly up and down in front of the camp. He could hear shouting in the camp itself. Lights were blazing and men were running here and there: they had just discovered that a prisoner had escaped. At that moment, a large black car with four officers inside it, stopped at the camp gates. The officers got out and the prisoner stood to attention and saluted as they passed. When they had gone, the driver of the car came towards him. The man obviously wanted to talk. He was rather elderly with grey hair and clear blue eyes. The prisoner felt sorry for him, but there was nothing else he could do. As the man came near, the prisoner knocked him to the ground with a sharp blow. Then, jumping into the car, he drove off as quickly as he could.

Notes on the text

1  It is called a clavichord. 本课的许多动词都是被动语态,如:“Our clavichord is kept...”,“The instrument was bought…”,“it was damaged…”,“two of the strings were broken”等。

2  a friend of my father's,我父亲的一位朋友。

First things first

Further notes on the text

1  we have an old musical instrument.

2  It is called a clavichord。

What do you call this?

They call him big Tom.

3  It has belonged to our family for a long time.

This farm belong to me and it belonged to my father before me.

4  She struck the keys too hard and two of the strings were broken.

He fell heavily and broke his arm.

Grammar in use

(The passives)(1)

John cooked the food last nigjt.

The food was cooked last night.

The instrument is being repaired by a friend of my father's.

Has the film been shown yet?

It's being shown now.

I live in a very old town which is surrounded by beautiful woods.

That table was made by my grandfather.

This piano was made in England.

The car was repaired last week.

2  双重所有格(The double genitive }

-’s结构的所有格也可用于“of结构”之后,如:a friend of my father's(我父亲的一位朋友),意思是我父亲的许多朋友之一。

例如在son一词之前,我们不会同时用this和my两个限定词,而只可说this son of mine(我的这个儿子)。其他一些表示所属关系的代词的例子如a friend of yours(你的一个朋友),an uncle of hers(她的一个叔叔)等。在名词前面,我们可以用a,this, that, these, some, any, no等等,但不用the。  He is a friend of mine(他是我的一个朋友)比He is my friend更常用,后者含有“他是我的一个特殊的或惟一的朋友”之意。而He is no friend of mine的含义是“我根本不认识他”或“他是我的敌人”。

Lesson 70   Red for danger

First listen and then answer the question.

How was the drunk removed from the ring?

During a bullfight, a drunk suddenly wandered into the middle of the ring. The crowd began to shout, but the drunk was unaware of the danger. The bull was busy with the matador at the time, but it suddenly caught sight of the drunk who was shouting rude remarks and waving a red cap. Apparently sensitive to criticism, the bull forgot all about the matador and charged at the drunk. The crowd suddenly grew quiet. The drunk, however, seemed quite sure of himself. When the bull got close to him, he clumsily stepped aside to let it pass. The crowd broke into cheers and the drunk bowed. By this time, however, three men had come into the ring and they quickly dragged the drunk to safety. Even the bull seemed to feel sorry for him, for it looked on sympathetically until the drunk was out of the way before once more turning its attention to the matador.

Lesson 64   The Channel Tunnel

First listen and then answer the question.

Why was the first tunnel not completed?

In 1858, a French engineer, Aime Thome de Gamond, arrived in England with a plan for a twenty-one-mile tunnel under the English Channel. He said that it would be possible to build a platform in the centre of the Channel. This platform would serve as a port and a railway station. The tunnel would be well-ventilated if tall chimneys were built above sea level. In 1860, a better plan was put forward by an Englishman, William Low. He suggested that a double railway-tunnel should be built. This would solve the problem of ventilation, for if a train entered this tunnel, it would draw in fresh air behind it. Forty-two years later a tunnel was actually begun. If, at the time, the British had not feared invasion, it would have been completed. The world had to wait almost another 100 years for the Channel Tunnel. It was officially opened on March 7,1994, finally connecting Britain to the European continent.

If you park your car in the wrong place, a traffic policeman will soon find it.

If you ate more and talked less, we would both enjoy our dinner!

If I were you, I would not go to London tomorrow.

If it had rained, we would have stayed at home.

If I had worked harder at school, I'd have go a better job.

在 if从句中可用 could have+过去分词代替 had been able to +动词原形:

Why didn't you read the book yesterday?

I'd have read it if I could have bought it!

Recently, one of Jeremy's closest friends asked him to make a speech at a wedding reception. This is the sort of thing that Jeremy loves. He prepared the speech carefully and went to the wedding with Jenny. he had included a large number of funny stories in the speech and, of course, it was a great success. As soon as he had finished, Jenny told him she wanted to go home. Jeremy was a little disappointed by this but he did as his daughter asked. On the way home, he asked Jenny if she had enjoyed the speech. To his surprise, she said she hadn't. Jeremy asked her why this was so and she told him that she did not like to see so many people laughing at him!

Lesson 11   Not guilty无罪

Listen to the tape then answer the question below.

What was the Customs Officer looking for?

Customs Officers are quite tolerant these days, but they can still stop you when you are going through the Green Channel and have nothing to declare. Even really honest people are often made to feel guilty. The hardened professional smuggler, on the other hand, is never troubled by such feelings, even if he has five hundred gold watches hidden in his suitcase. When I returned form abroad recently, a particularly officious young Customs Officer clearly regarded me as a smuggler.

'Have you anything to declare?' he asked, looking me in the eye.

'No', I answered confidently.

'Would you mind unlocking this suitcase please?'

'Not at all,' I answered.

The Officer went through the case with great care. All the thing I had packed so carefully were soon in a dreadful mess. I felt sure I would never be able to close the case again. Suddenly, I saw the Officer's face light up. He had spotted a tiny bottle at the bottom of my case and he pounced on it with delight.

'Perfume, eh?' he asked sarcastically. 'You should have declared that. Perfume is not exempt from import duty.'

'But it isn't perfume,' I said. 'It's hair gel.' Then I added with a smile, 'It's a strange mixture I make myself.'

As I expected, he did not believe me.

'Try it!' I said encouragingly.

The officer unscrewed the cap and put the bottle to his nostrils. He was greeted by an unpleasant smell which convinced him that I was telling the truth. A few minutes later, I was able to hurry away with precious chalk marks on my baggage.

Further notes on the text

1.Before he retired, Frank was the head of a very large business company, but as a boy he used to work in a small shop.

John is the head of the family.

Frank is the head of that firm.

时”,as a boy相当于 as he was a boy。

2.It was his job to repair bicycles…

3.He saved money for years and in 1958 he bought a small workshop of his own.

(1)for years表示“许多年”。

(2)of one's own为固定短语,表示“自己的”、“属于自己的”,own为代词:

He wanted a room of his own.

Do you have a house of your own?

My aunt Jennifer is in her late thirties/early forties, but she often appears on the stage as a young girl.

5.Frank smiled when he remembered his hard early years and the long road to success.

(1)hard

She lived a hard life in those years.

(2)one's early years指某人的早年(生活),意义相近的表达方式为early in one's life。

(3) the long road to success是一种比喻的说法,因为success是抽象名词。

Grammar in use

Yesterday afternoon Frank Hawkins was telling me about his experiences as a young man.

He was still smiling when the door opened and his wife came in.

Last Sunday, I went and sat on the river bank as usual.

Some children were playing games on the bank and there were some people rowing on the river.

What were you doing at two o'clock?I was looking for you everywhere.

I was fishing.

2.used to do

它后面经常用由but now…,but not…any more/any longer等构成的、用了一般现在时的句子以强调过去和现在的不同之处。

I used to smoke, but I don't any more/any longer.

He used to be a lazy boy, but now he is very hard-working.

Used he to smoke?

He usedn't / used not to smoke.

Did he use to smoke?

He didn't use to smoke.

在针对used to提间时,一般也用did:

I used to be a good swimmer.

Did you really?I didn't even know you could swim.

First things first

Further notes on the text

1.Last week I went to the theatre.

课文中go to the theatre = go to the theatre to see a play,即去剧场看戏。类似的还有go to the cinema = go to the cinema to see a film(去电影院看电影)。

go to school上学

go to bed上床,睡觉

go to church上教堂,去做礼拜(参考第1册第68课at school, at church;第1册第85课have been to school/church)

2.had a very good seat,

the front seat of a car汽车的前座

Take a seat, please.

3.The play was very interesting.

This is an interesting book/idea.

4.…were sitting behind me. They were talking loudly.    …

5.I got very angry.

而I was very angry则仅表示当时的状态是生气,并不暗示过程。

6.in the end,

She tried hard to finish her homework by herself. In the end, she had to ask her brother for help.

7.none of your business,

It is my business to look after your health.

This is none of his business.

(2)表示否定的代词none意义上相当于not any或no one,但语气较强:

She kept none of his letters.

None of my friends left early.

None of your silly remarks!

8.a private conversation,

在西方文化中人们对private(私人的,个人的)这个概念很看重。 所以课文中的小伙子会 振振有词地说“This is a private conversation!”

动词必须与主语“一致”,所以主语决定动词的单复数形式(如I am, you are, he has)。

Last night Lucy went to the theatre.

I heard a voice at the door just now.
